Business went super casual at Alexander Wang Spring/Summer ’17 on Saturday, September 10th at New York Fashion Week. As front row guests, Madonna, Lourdes Leon, Kylie Jenner, Tyga, Skrillex, and Pamela Anderson looked on, the designer showed beachy silhouettes, such as bikinis and board shorts, in fabrics more typically found during a conference call. Referring to the collection as “50 Shades of Grey meets Lords of Dogtown,” Wang chopped and screwed scuba wear, skatepark staples, lingerie, and 9-to-5 attire to churn out a hopelessly cool, laid-back, and sometimes very sexy collection. Khakis were paired with strappy tops and neoprene lent its tight fit to flouncy midi-dresses. Wang consistently proves himself to be the ultimate taste-maker and while his design decisions rendered the clothes unfit for the office or the ocean, the collection provided the perfect uniforms for the atmospheres that Wang does best: the club and the street.
Wang used NYFW as a platform to launch not only his SS’17 collection but also his newest collaboration with Adidas Originals. For the runway show finale, the designer’s model squad ran out adorned in the sporty collection. Before the collection officially hit stores, a limited “capsule drop” was available in “pop-up trucks” in Soho, Williamsburg, and on 5th Ave earlier this week.
While his collection is always one to look out for, its Wang’s after parties that have become notorious and this year’s #WangFest event was no exception. Guests including Zoe Kravitz, Aziz Ansari, Tinashe, and more were treated to Wang’s typical high/low blend of fast food, high fashion, and hip hop. Desiigner, Travis Scott, and Fetty Wapp all performed. To visualize the party one only needs a list of event sponsors: BIC lighters, 7-Eleven, McDonalds, Don Julio, and Lexus all supported the fashion fête.
