Amaya Arzuaga’s Fall 2012 collection was shown in the sumptuous Spanish embassy, a highly appropriate venue considering Arzuaga’s Spanish background and design influence. Sonia Delaunay’s paintings and textiles inspired the looks in the collection, as well as the artistic movement started by Sonia’s husband, Robert Delaunay, called Orphism. Sonia’s artwork was translated into the garments via piping that formed irregular, abstract shapes over heavy mohair fabrics in dark blues, blacks, and reds. Orphism, with its origins in Cubism, was brought into the collection through Arzuaga’s intense layering and overlapping of forms and colors.
