On Thursday, November 13th, Barneys unveiled, in an epic and extravagant ceremony, their holiday window displays. This year Barneys enlisted the help of famed director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, Great Gatsby) and his costume designer wife, Catherine Martin in their ‘Baz Dazzled’ collaboration. The unveiling did not fall short of Luhrmann’s penchant for extravagance, with a seven-minute show that shut down Madison Avenue. A cappella group, Pentatonix, serenaded a massive crowd that gathered before the curtained windows of the flagship store on 61st street, as dancers filtered through and onto the stage in an acrobatic performance.
Luhrmann and Martin drew inspiration for the windows from traditional holiday motifs — woodland and forest creatures, animals, elves — but elevated the idea, taking it one step further. Unlike previous displays, Luhrmann implemented a live-action element, which will continue throughout the 6-week holiday season with opera singers appearing on the balconies of Barneys at different intervals.
Luhrmann invites his audience to peek into a wonderful and spectacular world, both strange and alluring. He maintains his delightful and fantastic signature in this unique collaboration not to be missed. Check it out in person and head to Barneys on 61st and Madison.
