While most designers seem eager to dress the most current Instagram stars in the fastest fashion, Brandon Maxwell is bringing classics back to ready-to-wear. On Tuesday, February 16, only a day after dressing Lady Gaga at The Grammys, he and the pop provocateur dashed to New York just in time to show his second collection at New York Fashion Week. Models descended the steps of the Monkey Bar in black, white and navy evening gowns, sculptural separates, and voluminous mini dresses. Nineteen-year-old newcomer, Imaan Hammam, closed the show in a billowing ivory jumpsuit with a statement-making train. The collection was a testament to great tailoring and made it easy to see why Maxwell is a successful stylist. Although the garments were rooted in classic glamour, the flawless tailoring and sultry silhouettes meant that each look felt modern and ready for the wearer’s next cocktail soiree or talk show appearance.
