DJ, musician, label manager, businesswoman and fashion designer Ellen Allien is regarded as a fixed star in the electronic music galaxy and a creature without whom Berlin’s vibrant techno landscape wouldn’t be the same. Last month, she released her most recent album, LISm, on her own label, BPitch Control, and today she shares with you “Gate of Light” (Ambient Version), a portion of LISm and a featured track in its non-ambient form on BPitch Control’s “Where The Wind Blows” compilation. Take a listen below and see her live all over the world, including New York, Detroit, and D.C., over the next several months. When Ellen Allien was asked by two choreographers/dancers to compose a soundtrack for their dance performance “Drama per Musica,” she had already been toying with the idea of writing a musical arrangement for a few years. Under the direction of Alexandre Roccoli and Sevérine Rième, the performance took place in March 2011 as part of the Spectacles Vivants Festival at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. A year later, Ellen decided to revive and rework the piece. The result, LISm, is a very personal and emotive piece of music, reflecting the ethos of Ellen Allien’s DJ sets. During this 44:58 minute soundtrack, the curtain rises and falls on a variety of soundscapes, songs and tracks – a fluid musical journey through Ellen Allien’s world rather than a concept album.
