Pop songstress Lorde just dropped her single, “Yellow Flicker Beat,” the lead song from the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. The single remains true to Lorde’s musical aesthetic, which is to say, the smokiness of her voice is vibrant and impactful. The song begins quietly and gradually grows louder until it bursts into a chorus that is so wonderfully Lorde and cinematic, we’re excited to see at what point it’ll be heard in the upcoming film based on Suzanne Collins’ teen book series. It’s been almost a year since Lorde’s critically acclaimed debut album Pure Heroine was released. Since then, she has established herself as the perfect teen pop idol, with not only two Grammy Awards behind her, but also a catalog of feminist aphorisms. It should come as no surprise then, why Lorde might’ve been asked to not only sing The Hunger Games’ lead track, but also to curate the entire album, which will be released by Republic Records in November.
