THE UNTITLED MAGAZINE TAKES YOU ON A TOUR OF PULSE NEW YORK 2013

PULSE CONTEMPORARY ART FAIRS presented PULSE New York 2013, from May 9-12, 2013 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. Marking its eighth New York edition, PULSE New York presented 60 national and international galleries exhibiting a blend of emerging and established artists working in all media from photography, painting, and sculpture to performance, installation, and video art. “The number of outstanding international galleries continues to be one of the fair’s strengths, making PULSE New York 2013 the strongest fair to date. A testament to PULSE’S impact and appeal is that eight of the 13 galleries exhibiting in IMPULSE – our section dedicated to galleries presenting solo artist projects – are all drawn from separate countries outside of the U.S.,” comments Cornell DeWitt, Director.

The impact of international galleries is seen in the main section of PULSE New York. Gallery Wittenbrink (Munich) has returned to New York, after several years away from the art fair circuit, with paintings by emerging artists Koen Vermeule, Aylin Langreuter, and Florian Thomas. The gallery noted that PULSE’s international platform was key to introducing these artists to a broader audience. Also from Munich, Galerie Andreas Binder will present new paintings by Matthias Meyer, and young artist Anna Navasardian, in addition to Yigal Ozeri’s oil on paper works, and photographs by Dieter Rehm and Philipp Lachenmann; Tokyo Gallery+BTAP (Tokyo/Beijing) – the first contemporary art gallery in Tokyo, founded in 1950, and last exhibiting at PULSE in
2010 – is returning to PULSE New York showcasing the works of acclaimed Japanese artist Yoshio Murakami, alongside the work of emerging artist Miki Taira; Galerie Stefan Roepke (Cologne/Madrid), exhibiting with PULSE since its earliest days, will curate its booth around abstraction with a mix of young, mid-career, and historical artists including Jason Gringler, Jordi Alcaraz, and Eduardo Chillida; NIEVES FERNANDEZ (Madrid) will bring large drawings by Chiharu Shiota, which were originally made for a retrospective at Casa Asia, Danica Phelps, and Jordi Alcaraz. International galleries also dominate IMPULSE, the portion of the fair devoted to galleries presenting solo exhibitions by emerging artists. These galleries include camara oscura galeria de arte (Madrid), presenting South African artist Johann Ryno de Wet; Identity Art Gallery (Hong Kong), featuring photographer Kurt Tong; OTTO ZOO (Milan) showing Dutch artist Marjolijn De Wit whose collage work explores man’s impact on nature; and Art Mûr (Montreal) dedicating its booth to the installations and miniature models of Guillaume Lachapelle. The U.S. galleries complementing IMPULSE include Carroll and Sons (Boston), which will feature a smaller scale version of Ambreen Butt’s I Am My Lost Diamond, which was created for Realms of Intimacy at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center in 2011. It was comprised of over 20,000 casts of fingertips and toes that were installed directly on a 13′ x 70′ wall. In response to a 2010 suicide bomb in Butt’s native Pakistan, the installation will be paired with large work on paper, In God We Trust; and at Krause Gallery (New York), David E. Peterson’s perfectly crafted paintings translate iconic designs, fashions, architecture and our everyday world into a post-minimal conversation.

PULSE New York 2013 welcomes a distinguished group of new galleries, including Galerie Michael Sturm, PULSE’s newest committee member, who will vote on the exhibitors for PULSE Miami 2013; seasoned New York photography dealer Steven Kasher, whose booth will feature large-scale fashioned-oriented photographs by Miles Aldridge and Daido Moriyama, as well as work by Fred W. McDarra, Randy Polumbo, and others; Michael Hoppen Contemporary (London) will also add to the strong photography component of the fair with a solo exhibition of large-scale monochrome photo collages of urban landscapes by Japanese artist, Sohei Nishino, whose work has never been exhibited in the U.S.; Ann-Marie Meister, Co-Founder & Co- Director of Artport-making waves, will curate a show of photographs and sculpture by Mia Pearlman and Beatrice Pediconi, entitled Natural Forces, at Z2O Galleria | Sara Zanin (Milan); and Lower East Side gallery MARC STRAUS (New York) will bring new work by Jeffrey Gibson and Charles Hinman.
