ALEXANDER WANG – NEW YORK – SPRING/SUMMER 2015 RUNWAY SHOW
A known sneaker-head, Wang’s collection was influenced by sneakers and the way they’re tailored. Examining the aesthetics of Nike Flyknits, Addidas Stan Smiths, and even the Jordan Elephant pattern, Wang re-appropriated their designs as fitted shirts, high-waisted pants, pleated skirts, and even handbags–every material and pattern you’d find in a sneaker, except for the sneaker itself. There was a lot of leather, mesh, and rubber. Given the growing penchant for luxury sneakers in today’s trends, Wang’s collection abstracts the fad and takes it another step further. Sleek, modish, and frightfully sophisticated, what we saw on the runway was an impressive and inventive spin on urban fashion: a happy marriage between streetwear and high fashion. In addition to a new season of everything Wang, the designer will also be releasing his collaboration with H&M on November 6th, 2014. Given what he’s shown us at Fashion Week, let’s hope what he created for the Swedish retailer will be just as beautiful.
In promotion of Wang’s collection, British-Canadian film maker and photographer, Trevor Undi, composed a flashy and sumptuous fifteen-second Instagram video for the designer’s Spring/Summer 2015 line. Undi, who’s previously worked with high-end names like Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and Balenciaga (where Wang is the creative director of) is no stranger when it comes to creating moody and alluring teasers for fashion shows. Splicing behind-the-scene footage with on the runway looks, Undi’s trailer for Wang’s sneaker-themed line is captivating, thrilling, and more importantly, previews a very cutting-edge collection from the designer.
