Claire Barrow presents her Autumn/Winter 14-15 collection, her first as part of NEWGEN. The designer gained a following for her bespoke hand-painted leathers early on. Ever motivated by a DIY, hand-crafted spirit, Claire Barrow went on to develop her brand throughout three seasons at Fashion East. Encompassing a full wardrobe of illustrated garments, each collection invites the wearer to enter her world in which fashion and artist expression collide and challenge each other.
Autumn/Winter 14-15 takes its starting point from a number of deceased male icons, for whom Barrow creates souvenirs to have and to hold. Whether disaffected, suppressed or self-sacrificing for their art, these heartthrobs inspire the ultimate unrequited love.
Collaged into each garment, digital prints depicting Barrow’s original hand paintings are comprised of primary colours with dark expressive strokes. Commenting on the commerciality of mass produced imagery, these reproduced illustrations on shiny satin jackets and floor-length dresses become a sort of unofficial souvenir of the dead men. In celebration of the designer’s heroes, their faces decorate square silk scarves and men’s ties.
Made for moving, dancing, singing, just like the artists they pay homage to, these are clothes that perform – hand painted leather jackets and high-collared portrait knits are adorned with fringing; matching silk shirts and flared trousers are finished with metallic tassled ties. Everything is raglan sleeved to give the effect of smooth feminine shoulders.
Building on the success of her Matchesfashion.com collaboration, Claire reincarnates the soft leather clutch with tassels and hand drawn portraits, while her signature leathers are ever present, illustrated with these personas. Wearing a part of the man they can never now meet their fans join the dead boys club with a piece of Claire Barrow.
