Once a year, the stars of the fashion and art worlds align for the most prestigious museum event of the year – the annual Met Ball. Corresponding with the upcoming exhibition, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, the 2017 edition of the ball will honor 74-year-old designer Rei Kawakubo with a Comme des Garçons-themed night. The May 1st event marks the first time in decades that a living designer has been the main focus of the night. The last time there was a such an occurrence was 1983’s Yves Saint Laurent-themed ball. On choosing to honor the founder of famed avant-garde label, Costume Institute curator stated,
“Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years. By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.” -Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute
With tickets going for $30,000 and tables for $275,000, attendees to the Met Ball are an incredibly exclusive bunch and represent the who’s who of the art and entertainment elite. Last years guests included Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Taylor Swift, the Jenner sisters, Madonna & Lady Gaga. This year’s hosts are also A-list stars. Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady will join Kawakubo and Anna Wintour in co-chairing the event.

The exhibition, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, will open on May 4th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and continue through September 4th but it isn’t the only big debut for the fashion label this spring. Comme des Garçons recently announced a collaboration with cult streetwear brand, Supreme. The collection is sure to sell out so grab your pieces quick! It drops tomorrow, April 13th, at Supreme stores in New York City, London, Paris and Los Angeles.
