With all of the election drama and various worldwide crises, 2016 is shaping up to be quite a serious year. While many designers took cues from the current atmosphere and used SS’17 as a platform for political statements, Rio Uribe went the opposite route and injected New York Fashion Week with a giant dose of lighthearted fun.
His latest Gypsy Sport runway show on September 11th opened with a Beyoncé dance courtesy of Models Inc., complete with pleather thigh-highs and hot pants. As models dressed in his trademark blend of sporty mesh and flapper pizzazz walked the runway, Uribe’s friends, Oscar 1992 and Jay Boogie, provided a running commentary of the show, making it the most humorous event of the week.
