It was hard to anticipate what M.I.A. would come up with for her highly anticipated fifth studio album. But after the indie artist premiered the “Matadatah Scroll 01 ‘Broader Than A Border'” video worldwide on July 13th, the anticipation and excitement among her fans seemed to grow even more. During its premiere, the record, which was a two-song release, was also accompanied by a music video. The video intended to take each individual track and join them together to make a single piece of work.
The video moves through a series of vibrant and creative sequence shots in India to the Cote d’Ivoire and features cuts of young, female sword fighters performing. The highly visual short film was directed and edited by M.I.A. This video was not her first introduction to video production though. The alternative singer directed and edited her video for the single “Warriors,” which was featured on her second mixtape, Matangi.
“Matadatah Scroll 01 ‘Broader Than A Border'” is the first in a series of visual records, specific to M.I.A.’s eclectic style and sound. The releases, similar to this, will be premiered over the coming months and will feature a collection of new songs, accompanied by music videos, directed and edited by M.I.A. as well. Each video will uniquely be shot in a different country, which will ultimately come together to form a global and visual album, solely produced by M.I.A.
