The Met Gala returns on May 5, 2025, transforming the Metropolitan Museum of Art into a celebration of fashion history, culture, and cutting-edge style. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” promises not only a sartorial spectacle but also a profound exploration of Black influence on fashion, with a particular focus on the art of tailoring and dandyism.

A Historic Theme: Superfine and the Black Dandy

Curated by Andrew Bolton and inspired by Monica L. Miller’s seminal book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition-and by extension, the Gala-delves into three centuries of Black fashion through the lens of dandyism. This marks the Costume Institute’s first menswear-focused exhibit since 2003, and its first-ever museum shows devoted exclusively to Black men’s style.

The exhibition, opening to the public on May 10, will feature twelve sections, each highlighting a different facet of Black dandyism, from “Heritage” and “Beauty” to “Cool” and “Presence”. Expect to see garments, photographs, paintings, and artifacts that chronicle how Black men have used fashion as both resistance and self-expression, challenging societal norms and shaping global trends.

Dress Code: “Tailored for You”

This year’s dress code, “Tailored for You,” invites guests to interpret tailoring in personal and imaginative ways. While classic suiting is at the heart of the code, expect a spectrum of looks from sharp zoot suits and jazz-age flourishes to bold, contemporary takes on menswear-inspired gowns and accessories. The emphasis is on fit, individuality, and, above all, honoring the legacy of Black designers and culture.

Accessories such as top hats, pocket squares, and suspenders are expected to make strong appearances, and guests are encouraged to champion Black-owned brands in their designer selections.

A Groundbreaking Host Lineup

For the first time, the Met Gala’s co-chairs are all Black men, underscoring the night’s focus and significance. The 2025 co-chairs are Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell WilliamsNBA legend LeBron James serves as honorary chair, joining Anna Wintour, the event’s perennial guiding force.

The host committee is a who’s who of cultural influence, spanning athletes (Simone Biles, Angel Reese), filmmakers (Spike Lee, Regina King), musicians (Janelle Monáe, André 3000), actors (Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Pope), authors (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie), and fashion icons (Dapper Dan, Edward Enninful, Olivier Rousteing).

Why This Year Matters

“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” is more than a theme-it’s a statement. As curator Andrew Bolton notes, the exhibition and Gala mark a significant step in diversifying the Met’s fashion narrative and redressing historical biases. For co-chairs like Lewis Hamilton and Colman Domingo, the night is deeply personal, offering a platform to celebrate Black excellence, resilience, and creativity at the highest level of the fashion world.

Pharrell Williams sums up the spirit of the night: “I want it to feel like the most epic night of power, a reflection of Black resiliency in a world that continues to be colonized”.

From Harlem-inspired street style to the refined elegance of Congolese sapeurs, the 2025 Met Gala delivers unforgettable looks and a powerful message about identity, representation, and the transformative power of fashion. As the world tuned, this year’s Met Gala becomes a landmark moment-where style meets substance, and fashion history is rewritten on the steps of the Met.
