‘MOVIES WITH A VIEW’ AT BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK TO START SHE TALKS SERIES

Following Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s launch this summer of SHE DIRECTS and SHE SPINS, comes SHE TALKS: a series of discussions by women about the intersection between their field of work and New York City. SHE DIRECTS was an initiative to select only female-directed films for Brooklyn Bridge Park’s beloved outdoor movie series, ‘Movies With A View’, this summer, following alarming statistics that show only 4% of the directors on the 1,100 top films from 2007 to 2017 were female. Similarly, SHE SPINS began as an effort to hire female DJs for the pre-movie music shows since 24% of DJs are woman, yet only less than 10% get hired for music festivals. The newest addition, SHE TALKS, was also created to combat misrepresentation across various fields by giving voice to prominent women in media, art, politics, and sports.

The series, that will run from July 12-August 20, will take place on select Thursdays before movie screenings. One of the woman that will be featured is Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development in New York City, Alicia Glen. Prior to working for the government she was the Head of the Urban Investment Group (UIG) at Goldman Sachs. Since her governmental position, she has focused extensively on affordable housing, citywide ferry use, and technological advances. She also dedicates a lot of her time to the Tech Talent Pipeline and WE-NYC, which are initiatives to help connect New Yorkers to jobs and mentor entrepreneurial women on ways to succeed in New York City, respectively.

The event is presented as a partnership with IFC and The Wing. The Wing provides community and living spaces for women to thrive. They have locations in Flatiron, SoHo, DUMBO, Washington, D.C., and soon San Francisco. Through this partnership, SHE TALKS will also be featuring a “Not All HERoes Wear Capes” presentation, a conversation with Elle Clay of Sports Bra titled “#BallIsLife” and a female comedian. The effort showcases the perspective of inspirational female leaders that will hopefully inspire other women to follow in their footsteps.
