STARS OF TODAY MEET THE STARS OF TOMORROW: YAGP’S 2026 GALA CELEBRATES THE FUTURE OF DANCE
On April 16, 2026, the world of ballet converged at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Youth America Grand Prix’s annual “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” Gala—an evening that balanced legacy, innovation, and the next generation of global dance talent.
Hosted by Misty Copeland and Tamar Greene, the event underscored YAGP’s ongoing mission: expanding access, diversity, and opportunity within the dance world. Copeland, reflecting on her long-standing relationship with the organization, emphasized the importance of nurturing emerging talent, while Greene brought a theatrical dimension to the evening with a live vocal performance from “Hamilton.”

This year’s gala honored Rebecca Hessel Cohen, founder and creative director of LoveShackFancy, and choreographer, author, and former American Ballet Theatre dancer Melanie Hamrick. Both honorees represent distinct yet intersecting worlds—fashion and choreography—highlighting the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of contemporary performance culture.
The evening’s program delivered a series of standout performances from some of the most celebrated dancers in the international ballet scene. Among the highlights were the New York debut of Nicoletta Manni and Timofej Adrijashenko of La Scala Ballet, performing excerpts from Mauro Bigonzetti’s “Caravaggio,” and the return of Polina Semionova of Berlin State Ballet, who captivated audiences with selections from “Manon” and a reinterpretation of “The Dying Swan.”

Additional performances brought together leading dancers from American Ballet Theatre, the Royal Ballet, and New York City Ballet, including Christine Shevchenko, Calvin Royal III, Reece Clarke, and Roman Mejia. One of the evening’s most notable moments featured an original choreography by Hamrick, set to music by The Rolling Stones, with a special arrangement by her partner Mick Jagger—an intersection of classical dance and contemporary music culture that felt distinctly current.
As part of a longstanding YAGP tradition, 120 finalists from the organization’s international competition joined the stage for a closing ensemble performance, reinforcing the gala’s core message: today’s rising dancers are tomorrow’s stars.

Following the performance, more than 300 guests gathered for a dinner held in the theater’s Promenade, transformed into a pink-hued environment in collaboration with LoveShackFancy. The immersive setting extended the visual language of the evening, with dancers performing from surrounding balconies, blurring the boundary between stage and audience.
The gala also drew a notable cross-section of leaders from fashion, film, and society, reinforcing YAGP’s position at the intersection of culture and performance. Dinner was led by Gala Creative Chair Marcella Guarino Hymowitz alongside an extensive group of co-chairs and Board Chair Lina Wallach, with YAGP Co-Founder Gennadi Saveliev and board members including Susan Jaffe and B Michael in attendance. The guest list reflected a wide cultural reach, with appearances from F. Murray Abraham, Brooke Adams, Chelsea Clinton, Mara Hoffman, Dylan Lauren, Chris Noth, Tony Shalhoub, Demi Singleton, Sutton Stracke, Skylar Brandt, Katya Tolstova, Michelle Ochs, and The Untitled Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Indira Cesarine, among others.

Fashion’s presence extended beyond the guest list through the evening’s Pointe Shoe Project, which featured custom-designed pointe shoes by an array of leading designers and artists including Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, LoveShackFancy, Alice + Olivia, Monse, and Herve Leger by Michelle Ochs. The initiative, now in its third year, continues to merge fashion and dance while raising funds to support the next generation of performers.
Beyond the night’s artistic program, the gala maintained a strong philanthropic focus. Proceeds supported YAGP’s global scholarship programs, which have awarded over $5 million to young dancers since its founding. In a continued effort to increase accessibility, 1,000 tickets were donated to students from organizations including the Harlem School for the Arts and The Misty Copeland Foundation, reinforcing YAGP’s commitment to cultivating not only performers but future audiences.

Looking ahead, YAGP’s 2026 season will culminate in its finals in Houston, where over 2,000 dancers selected from more than 15,000 global applicants will compete for scholarships and professional opportunities. YAGP’s gala served as both celebration and statement—positioning ballet not as an exclusive tradition, but as an evolving, global platform for talent, expression, and possibility.
