The Untitled Space continued its 10th-anniversary celebrations with an unforgettable live performance by renowned dancer Katherine Crockett on March 20, 2025, as part of its powerful exhibition UPRISE 2025: The Art of Resistance. This spectacular performance titled “THE ORACLE” resonated deeply with the themes of resistance and empowerment at the heart of the exhibition.

“Known as The Pythia or the Oracle at the Temple of Delphi.  This prophetess originally served as the visionary voice the ancient Earth Mother Goddess Gaia venerated by the early matriarchal people of Greece around 1500 BC. She was later stolen by the Greek Indo European Culture and renamed the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi. The Pythia was revered in society as she had the ability to enter into a trance like state and receive visions and prophetic messages from the realm of the divine. People traveled from all over seeking her prophetic counsel.  She was the vessel connecting the human with the divine through spiritual and physical ecstasy and wisdom of the divine feminine. On this vernal equinox where we rise from the darkest days and move into the light, I offer this dance and myself as the vessel of the Oracle, in remembrance that we are all born from the Earth and of Woman. And with hopes that we may heal Mother Earth and that all beings have happiness and be free of suffering. ” – Katherine Crockett on the inspiration behind her performance.

UPRISE 2025 is a dynamic reflection on activism, resistance, and the fight for equality, and this special performance encapsulated those ideals beautifully. Curated by Indira Cesarine, the exhibition opened earlier in the month on March 8th, in celebration of International Women’s Day, and runs throughout Women’s History Month.

It presents an array of works from 100 artists confronting some of the most urgent political and social issues of our time. The live performance by Katherine Crockett, a former Principal Dancer with The Martha Graham Dance Company, took place at The Untitled Space’s Tribeca location from 6 PM to 9 PM. Crockett’s performance was a mesmerizing display, directly engaging with the exhibition’s themes of resistance and activism.

With over two decades of celebrated work in contemporary dance, Crockett has become an iconic figure in the performance world. Her accomplishments span far beyond the stage, including starring in and choreographing Queen of the Night, working as Cate Blanchett’s dancer double in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and performing with legends like Mikhail Baryshnikov in the White Oak Dance Project. Crockett has also brought her talents to the fashion world, gracing the runways of Alexander McQueen and Victoria’s Secret.

Her performance at UPRISE 2025 is a continuation of her enduring collaboration with Cesarine, which has seen her work featured in previous exhibitions such as The Labyrinth and SHE INSPIRES. The evening’s success was marked by the seamless fusion of Crockett’s captivating performance within the immersive, multi-sensory environment of UPRISE 2025. The exhibition, which presents works from artists such as Jemima Kirke, Rose McGowan, and Reisha Perlmutter, provided a striking visual and conceptual backdrop for the performance, creating an unforgettable experience for all in attendance.

The UPRISE 2025 exhibition itself has been a critical platform for artistic voices challenging the status quo. It celebrated the power of art as resistance, shining a light on gender equality, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and the fight against political extremism and authoritarianism. Artists from all backgrounds were featured, contributing to a conversation about collective action and the transformative power of creativity in the face of adversity.

In addition to Crockett’s live performance, the evening was a celebration of The Untitled Space’s ten-year history as a beacon for underrepresented voices and political activism in the art world. Since its inception, the gallery has presented over 50 exhibitions and featured the work of more than 500 artists, many of whom have used their platforms to challenge political injustice, inequality, and oppression.

“UPRISE 2025: The Art of Resistance” is more than an exhibition; it is a movement—a declaration of resilience and a reminder of the enduring power of art to inspire change. With a standing ovation after Crockett’s performance, it was clear that the evening had successfully encapsulated the vision of the exhibition, celebrating both the gallery’s legacy and the future of art as a tool for social justice.

As Cesarine stated, “This exhibition is deeply personal for me, as an artist, curator, and advocate for social change. Katherine Crockett is a force of nature, and her performance speaks directly to the core of UPRISE 2025—the belief that art can be a powerful tool for resistance.”

Indeed, UPRISE 2025 embodied this vision, honoring a decade of activism, creativity, and resilience at The Untitled Space. The event on March 20th proved to be an unforgettable milestone, leaving attendees inspired and empowered to continue the fight for justice, equality, and freedom.

About Katherine Crockett
Katherine Crockett is a NYC based performance artist. She was a Principal dancer in The Martha Graham Dance Company for 21 years. She has had works created for her by such diverse artists as Robert Wilson, Yvonne Rainer, Lucinda Childs, Martha Clarke, Richard Move, Larry Keigwin, Maureen Flemming-Odo, Anne B. Parsons, Susan Stroman and others. Crockett starred in and choreographed her role as the Queen in Off Broadway hit “Queen of the Night”. She danced as Cate Blanchett’s dancer double in the “Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. Crockett was a Guest soloist alongside Mikhail Baryshnikov in his White Oak Dance Project. Crockett has been televised performing Graham’s Appalachian Spring (PBS), Herodiade (PBS), and the iconic solo Lamentation (BBC). She also performed “Lamentation” as a guest artist for the “Return Festival” in Kosovo hosted by Vanessa Redgrave and UNICEF. Crockett was featured as Helen in the SITI Company’s production of Trojan Woman. Ms. Crockett is the lead actor of the feature film “Fall to Rise”.

She has performed and choreographed for special events and galas worldwide including the Cannes Film Festival with Dame Shirley Bassey, the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, the Gala of the Stars of the 21st century, The DAP Festival ,Park Avenue Armory Gala The FYC/ Vanity Fair Emmy’s special event for TNT’s “The Alienist”, Paramount Pictures Premiere party for “I Am The Night”, Ovation TV premiere special event for “Versaille”. Crockett choreographed The Cherry Orchard starring Ellen Burstyn at The Actors Studio and was featured in the runways of Alexander McQueen and Victoria’s Secret as well as dancing as the featured soloist for PRADASS2020 Shanghai. She has also created immersive performance experiences and events, such as “Fetish 67” for Steven Klein and Visionaire Magazine at Art Basel, “Cirque Du Nuit” for The Knot Gala, “Yellow Submarine,” an immersive cinema experience,” Down the Rabbit Hole” for TrueX/FOX, and several other projects collaborating with Comcast, House of Yes, Brooklyn Mirage, BBQ Films, Little Cinema, Brooklyn Museum, Park Avenue Armory, The National Arts Club as well as individual artists and private venues. Crockett’s dance film “Cloud Hidden” was selected for the Lincoln Center Dance On Camera Festival in 2021. 

Crockett is currently the Creative Director/Choreographer for a permanent new immersive entertainment production at the Museum of Sex Miami.

Through both The Untitled Space and Art4Equality, Cesarine has created a lasting legacy in the world of contemporary art, empowering artists to use their work as a tool for transformation and social justice.
