The Breeder Monaco
1, rue des Lilas,
MC 98000, Monaco

June 6 – July 6

The Breeder Monaco, in its inaugural exhibition is proud to present a solo show by Vlassis Caniaris (1928-2011) with sculptures, wall based works and installations from 1960 to 1980.

Throughout his 50-year career, Vlassis Caniaris mined the symbols and stereotypes of urban Zeitgeist with a prophetic vision that resonates ever more powerfully with time. Using found and recycled objects, abject and non-traditional materials, and with a unique approach to representation, he addressed the social issues of displacement, alienation and marginalization. During the military dictatorship in Greece (1967-1974), Caniaris’ narrowing visual vocabulary came to signify the increasing constrictions of personal freedoms.

Vlassis Caniaris work is on view in the 55th Venice Biennial “The Encyclopedic Palace” curated by Massismiliano Gioni, Arsenale, Venice and also in the exhibition “From Death to Death and other small tales: Masterpieces from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the D. Daskalopoulos Collection ” in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburg.

Recently Vlassis Caniaris’ work was presented in a solo exhibition at GAK Gesellschaft fur Aktuelle Kunst in Bremen and also at the Henry Moore Foundation in Leeds, UK (2012). Public collections include Tate Modern in London, SMAK Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Gent Belgium, Musée d’Art moderne de Saint-Etienne in Saint-Etienne France, Osthaus Museum in Hagen, National Gallery of Athens and National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens.
