Magnum Photos is celebrating 70 years of its significant contribution to photography and history by holding a number of events throughout New York City this month that present new and iconic work by established Magnum photographers.
The public seasons of events will be focused on Magnum’s three anniversary themes of community, witnessing history, and “Magnum Photos Now”. Events include exhibitions, screenings, panels, and sales, the special anniversary program will display the agency’s archival and contemporary work, highlighting the importance of the image in our changing world.
Some of the programs include the “Magnum Manifesto” exhibition that runs until September 3rd at the International Center of Photography. Curators Clément Chéroux and Clara Bouveresse demonstrate how Magnum Photos photographers navigate between photography as an art and as documentary evidence. The exhibition includes magazines, newspaper features, and letters, which puts some of the world’s most recognizable images in creative context.
At the Fulton Center, Magnum is featuring “A Life in Photography” until June 30th. Over 300 historic photographs are shown on a digitized, rotating exhibit of 50 screens. Photographs include reportage from the founding fathers of Magnum, such as Robert Capa and David Seymour. Newsha Tavakolian and Carolyn Drake are also featured for their work that highlights the continued importance of photography as both a journalistic tool and a form of self-expression.
Also featured until June 30th is the “Magnum: 70 at 70” exhibition at Neuehouse that has 70 photographic icons that have born witness to major events of the last 70 years. The pictures span the globe and covers events such as Arab Spring, South Africa under apartheid, and the recent migration crisis.
The “Protest!” exhibition will be featured at Milk Gallery, opening on June 20th and continuing until July 15th. This exhibition shows the photographs that document major protests from the 1930s to the present day. Some of the photographs include Eve Arnold’s portrait of civil rights activist Malcom X, Marc Riboud’s Vietnam War protestor, Stuart Franklin’s Tank Man, and Standing Rock by Larry Towell.
The Rubin Museum on 17th Street is also part of the celebration with “India in Full Frame.” The exhibition presents 69 photographs of transformative moments in Indian history by the pioneering photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, including scene of political upheaval, the final moments in Mahatma Gandhi’s life, and everyday people in Cartier-Bresson’s street photography style.
