PHOTOS FROM THE “SEX AND FRIENDS” EXHIBIT OPENING AT PILAR CORRIAS
January 12th, 2012 marked the opening of Tobias Rehberger’s latest exhibit entitled Sex and Friends at Pilar Corrias gallery. The German-born artist, who is regarded as one of the most important working artists today, transformed the gallery into a complex time-telling device.
Rehberger creates sculptures, environments and installations principally revolving around the concept of transformation. Working with industrial processes and technological innovations, the artist takes ordinary situations and familiar objects and explores the boundaries between functionality and aesthetic.
Sex and Friends is a series of unique shadow sculptures, which shift in shape at different times throughout the day due to special lighting effects. The shadow effect differs from each piece of art; some works transmitting words onto the wall and others blend into the patterns of the paintings in the background and virtually disappear.
This is Rehberger’s second solo show at Pilar Corrias, his first was in 2009 and titled Cuckoo Clock Shop. Also in 2009 Rehberger won the Golden Lion award for best artist at the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, for the Cafeteria of the Palazzo delle Exposizioni della Biennale.
This year, Rehberger was appointed Artistic Director at CODE_n, an international competition for new IT-based business models that will be presented at CeBit 2012, the world’s largest computer expo held in Hanover, Germany. The competition motto is “Shaping Mobile Life” and will be held in an exhibit space designed by Rehberger and architect Jürgen Mayer H.
