New York Academy of Art’s “To Take Home a Nude” Art Auction and Party
Sotheby’s NY
October 21, 2024
1334 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021

On October 21, 2024, the New York Academy of Art hosted its 32nd annual Take Home a Nude art auction and party at Sotheby’s. This year’s event honored American artist Jane Dickson, whose distinctive, vivid portrayals of urban life have captivated audiences and critics. With an uncanny eye and masterful skill, Dickson captures gritty, haunting, nocturnal cityscapes that delve deep into overlooked corners of urban existence. Her work explores the underbelly of society through subjects like strip clubs, diners, motels, sex workers, and their respectable counterparts: suburban homes, driveways, or businessmen, each rendered in an eerie light that suggests the viewer question what’s going on beneath the surface. Known for using unconventional surfaces like carpet and sandpaper, Dickson’s paintings render urban subjects in haunting textures, layered in neon and darkness. Currently, her work is on display at KARMA Gallery in Los Angeles, “Art We There Yet,” a comprehensive survey of her highway paintings.
