ART BASEL 2009: INTERVIEWS WITH NICK HACKWORTH
LAILA BINBREK / THIRD LINE GALLERY ON MONIR SHAHROUDY FARMANFARMAIAN
Born in 1924 in Qazvin, Iran, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian graduated from Cornell University, Parsons School of Design and the Faculty of Fine Art in Tehran. Since then she has been reinventing a traditional Iranian craft of reverse glass and mirror mosaics that showcase her truly unique style. In the late 60’s Monir began experimenting with different combinations of age old techniques of reverse glass painting, mirror mosaics and modern abstract minimalism. The result is geometric and reflective kaleidoscope pieces that marry tradition with modernism beautifully. Her works can be seen at The Third Line Gallery in Dubai; Queensland Gallery of Contemporary Art; Victoria and Albert Museum, UK; Carpet Museum, Tehran, Iran; Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Iran; Grey Art Gallery, New York University, New York.
KEVIN BRUK OF KEVIN BRUK GALLERY ON MATTHEW WEINSTEIN
Matthew Weinstein exhibited his installation piece “The Triumph of Painting” , which coincidentally includes no “actual” paintings. The boldly named installation continues Weinstein’s longtime interest in images of blood and death; featuring two life sized bronzed skeletons that are suspended in midair, caught in a balletic game of frisbee. Born and raised in New York City with a B. A. from Colombia University; Weinstein has been exhibiting his artwork since 1989 around the world and has been featured in many group and solo exhibitions: Kevin Bruk Gallery, Miami FL; Nolan Judin Gallery, Berlin, Germany; Sonnabend Gallery, Aspen CO; Ace Gallery, Los Angeles CA and Postmasters Gallery, New York; among many others.
