HANAYO AT TAKA ISHII GALLERY KYOTO
483 Nishigawa-cho Shimogyo-ku Kyoto #600-8325, JAPAN
Taka Ishii Gallery Kyoto is pleased to present “Berlin,” an exhibition by Hanayo from March 16 to April 20.
This exhibition will feature images from Hanayo’s latest publication Berlin hanayos saugeile kumpels, a massive collection of everyday images documenting her time spent with friends in the titular city. Of the 15 years that Hanayo lived in Europe, 11 were spent in Berlin, which has become a very special place for her. The exhibition will comprise prints of various sizes and also include works not published in Berlin.
The color prints, which were shot on the Olympus camera that Hanayo has used for many years, have a distinctive palette and offer subtle nuances that are unique to analog film. These features, which have been manifest since her earliest works, link seemingly disparate images such as portraits of artist and musician friends, everyday landscapes, and abstract images, and give them a mysterious “Hanayo-like” air. The exhibition will be her first at Taka Ishii Gallery in 17 years since her first solo show at the gallery in 1996.
Born in 1970, an artist based in Tokyo and Berlin. Hanayo has many professional faces. She has worked as a photographer, geisha, musician, and model. She exhibits photographs and collages, which capture her daily life in fantastic colors, as well as installations, in which she combines photographs and collages with sculptural objects and music.
