Random International’s immersive environment Rain Room (2012), a major component of the MoMA PS1 exhibition EXPO 1: New York, is presented in the lot directly adjacent to The Museum of Modern Art. Using advanced digital sensors and technology, viewers are encouraged to become performers in the exhibit as they can move through rain without actually getting wet. This precisely choreographed downpour provides an usual setting for intimate contemplation and wonder of the natural elements. Random International is known for such experimental projects and exhibits that come alive through audience interaction. Known for their distinctive approach to art and digital advancements in technology, Rain Room (2012) is their largest and most ambitious project to date. Where else can a person play God and control the rain? Visitors will explore the roles of science, technology and sheer human ingenuity that all interconnect to the stabilization and well being of our environment.
