On Friday November 9th, Salon Art & Design, produced by Sanford Smith + Associates, opened with a night of celebration for its 12th edition. Over 2,000 visitors entered the Park Avenue Armory throughout the Fair’s opening night celebration to preview a selection of the world’s finest design; vintage, modern and contemporary, enhanced by blue-chip 20th century art. This year, Salon features 50 leading exhibitors complemented by 12 Special Design Exhibitions from galleries, makers and brands around the world, spotlighting the trends of collectible design. A highlight of New York’s fall art calendar, the fair ran through Monday, November 13th.
Reporting an incredible number of sales from just opening night, Lobel Modern sold three items, including a monumental Karl Springer vase, a Philip and Kelvin Laverne painting and a set of chairs. Phoenix Ancient Art sold a Roman glass vase, while The Spaceless Gallery have serious leads on all their work. Newcomer bo Design Group sold a large work by ceramist Claire Frechet. Guy Regal reported the sale of one of their most important works, a Carlo Bugatti cabinet and a pair of Jules Leleu Shagreen tables. J. Lohmann Gallery sold three pieces including a piece by Ahryun Lee. ABASK received high interest in their tableware and games, with a booth filled with people throughout the night. Throckmorton Fine Art sold a photograph of Frida Kahlo and a small Buddha head. Yvel stated that this was “simply one of the best opening nights ever”.
Guests including Samuel Amoia, Nicole Berry, Derek Blasberg, Stewart Butterfield, Tom Chapman, Tom Delavan, Scott Drevnig, Anh Duong, Linda Fargo, Dennis Freedman, Wendy Goodman, Wes Gordon, MaryKate and Ashley Olsen, Edgardo Osorio, Candy Pratt Price, and others joined fair director Jill Bokor for an exclusive champagne preview. Dia Art Foundation kicked off the evening with a packed benefit hour at the fair, hosted by Nathalie & Laura de Gunzburg, the co-hosts of the fair’s opening evening.
