New York City has officially designated Fifth Avenue from 82nd – 105 streets “Museum Mile” because of the cultural diversity of the ten museums found there. In its 35th year, the Museum Mile Festival will take place on June 11th allowing New Yorkers and NYC visitors to experience and celebrate the arts.
The Festival was conceived during the fiscal crisis of the 1970’s by the museums that all share a home on Fifth Avenue. People were encouraged to celebrate a shared pride in their city and the festival brought many visitors to Fifth Avenue for the first time. Total attendance records over its many years have surpassed 1 million.
The museums featured in this festival include the Museum For African Art, El Museo Del Barrio, Museum Of The City Of New York, The Jewish Museum, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, the National Academy Museum and School Of Fine Arts, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Neue Galerie New York, Goethe-Institut New York/ German Cultural Center, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
