April 15 – May 27, 2016
The Black & White Gallery/ Project Space will present the installation, “Travelers & Settlers” by Nancy Friedemann – Sánchez April 15 – May 27, 2016. This installation is an exploration of gender, identity, and memory. It is also the third chapter of a visual novel that Friedemann – Sánchez has been working on over the years. The novel focuses on cultural memory, migration, and the pursuit of the American Dream. Various styles are used throughout “Travelers & Settlers” including paintings, sculptures, mixed media pieces, wood work, and lighting. Together, they tell a cultural story focusing on minimalism with allusions to Spanish Colonial paintings. The artist, who is of Columbian descent, included family heirlooms alongside her creations. This work also represents the artists personal migration because she now owns homes in both Brooklyn, New York and Lincoln, Nebraska, and frequently travels between the two.
The artist explains her work as, “anchored in feminism, my art is infused by American and Colombian cultural forms that are dominant or subordinate. My art is a bicultural and transcultural experience; it speaks of difference, of opposites. Having grown up in Colombia and having migrated to the US as an adult. I make art in two languages about the curious and intense experience of physically having migrated, yet having a piece of myself remaining rooted in Colombia. I create visual expressions of that syncretism that has taken place since the conquest of the Americas and that gets replicated in the migration experience. I see my art as multi-layered: it is political as it is personal. It is intricately interrelated with my domestic and work responsibilities; and with the supporting and administration of family and career. My options of life are integrated ethically in my art as I reflect and challenge the roles that historically have been assigned to women, in terms not only in the division of labor but also in the division of artistic and intellectual spaces.”
This will be Nancy Friedemann – Sánchez’ first exhibit at Black & White Gallery/ Project Space. She is a successful and talented artists whose work has been displayed all over the world in places such as New York, Nebraska, Columbia, London, and others. “Travelers & Settlers” is currently on display at the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, Nebraska (January 9 – April 3, 2016) as part of Nebraska Now museum programming. Like Friedemann – Sánchez, it will move between her resident states and will then make it’s New York debut, Friday, April 15, 2016 at 6:00 PM.
