I’m a Barbie, you’re a Barbie, everyone’s a Barbie.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is still some months away, but if you’ve so much as accessed the internet this week, you wouldn’t know it. We’ve only seen a grand total of about two minutes of the film, but it’s already certified meme candy, and social media has gone full Barbiecore. This week’s trailer gave us a better look at leading stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling – and the ever-growing roster of Hollywood A-listers who will be playing what looks to be a neighboring planet’s worth of Barbies and Kens.
The official Warner Bros. upload has already amassed more than 14 million views, thanks in no small part to a certain shot of Barbie’s feet. In the trailer, Robbie’s Barbie daintily steps out of her bedazzled heels and maintains her impeccably pointed arch, a hilariously self-aware nod to the classic doll’s anatomically impossible proportions. Thus, Barbie Meme #1 was born.
But beyond the trailer, it’s the character posters, which were revealed the same day, that likely has Barbie’s marketing team popping champagne bottles. The concept is simple, each one introduces a new Barbie or Ken with a quippy tagline. Now, the internet is using this Barbie Selfie Generator to make their own using pictures of themselves, celebrities, and even characters from other movies.
Little is known about the film’s actual plot, but many are speculating that Barbie will be deliciously meta – certain cast members are credited as Mattel Executives, with Will Ferrell appearing as the company’s CEO. More will undoubtedly be revealed before the film’s release on July 21, but here’s to hoping for a fun, ridiculous, and campy time. And in the meantime, you can turn yourself and everyone you know into a Barbie while you wait.
