The 2019 Guggenheim Young Collectors Party took place on April 11th, featuring “ballet kink” performative interventions in the museum’s iconic Frank Lloyd Wright–designed rotunda. Choreographed by artist Brendan Fernandes, the performances drew from classical ballet and modern dance, with a nod to fetish and Japanese bondage art of shibari. The BDSM styled performance was a brilliant compliment to artist Robert Mapplethorpe‘s exhibition on view, “Implicit Tensions,” honoring the groundbreaking work and sustained legacy of the artist known for his controversial photography.
The evening began with a seated dinner in The Wright for the Young Collectors Council and event co-chairs, host committee members, and artists whose work is represented in the Guggenheim collection through acquisitions of the YCC Art Fund. After dinner, guests celebrated in the rotunda with drinks, dessert, and dancing. Funds raised by the 2019 Young Collectors Party will benefit the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the YCC Art Fund, which has supported the acquisition of more than 140 works by emerging and established contemporary artists.
