When the news of Adele’s new album started to swirl in October, you could feel the excitement, anticipation and most of all, surprise. After her successful run with 21 followed by her single for the James Bond franchise Skyfall, the speculations of a new album were abuzz. However, like most things Adele, she doesn’t half-ass her music. In fact, she wanted to quit music thinking that she “shouldn’t come back,” and maybe she “should go out on a high.” After a vocal surgery and taking a four-year hiatus from music to deal with herself, giving birth to her son in October of 2012 inspired her to start recording again. And just like that, Adele is back and better than ever!
In a letter that she posted on October 21, 2015 on her website, as well as social media platforms Facebook and Twitter, Adele said, “My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one, I would call it a make-up record. I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time.” She continued, “25 is about getting to know who I’ve become without realizing. And I’m sorry it took so long, but you know, life happened.” Shortly after her new single Hello was released and it amassed over 267 million views on YouTube, which easily shattered Miley Cyrus’s viewership record and beat Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood within 24 hours alone. Hello sold 1.11 million downloads in its first week. The only other recording artist to achieve this is Elton John with his tribute to Princess Diana in titled Candle in the Wind.
Adele’s new album is projected to sell over 1 million copies in the first week alone once it is released on November 20, which is expected to surpass Britney Spears who held the record for the highest debut-week album sales by a solo artist with first-week sales of 1,319,000 copies for Oops! … I Did It Again for 15 years. “Slaying” would be putting it lightly. Perhaps the hiatus is what she needed. Time to become, as she eloquently put it, “sort of a bit more self aware than I used to be.” And maybe that is the secret to having it all.
