Billie Eilish has released “What Was I Made For?”, an original song written and performed for the highly-anticipated Barbie film, with Darkroom and Interscope Records. The highly anticipated Barbie, written and directed by Greta Gerwig, stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and will be released on July 21.
Oscar, Golden Globe, and multiple Grammy Award-winning Eilish composed “What Was I Made For?” with her brother FINNEAS, who produced the song in his home studio in Los Angeles. The song is intimate and heart-rending, existing as background for pivotal scenes throughout the film and upholding its message.
The song is also accompanied by an official music video, which Eilish directed. The video was broadcast on MTV Live, MTVU, MTV Biggest Pop, and the Paramount Times Square billboards. Reflecting on making the song and music video, Eilish shared on Instagram: “To be real with you this all seemed to happen in a time when i really needed it. I’m so so thankful for that.”
Since releasing her debut single “ocean eyes” in 2015, the 21-year-old Los Angeles native remains one of the biggest stars of the 21st century. Eilish’s sophomore album Happier Than Ever debuted at #1 in the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and in 19 countries across the globe, and she continues to shatter records and norms with her genre-defying sound. Eilish is also the youngest artist to write and record an official James Bond theme song, “No Time To Die,” which possibly prepared her for writing for the Barbie soundtrack.
Barbie is presented by Warner Bros. Pictures as a Heyday Films Production, a LuckyChap Entertainment Production, an NB/GG Pictures Production, and a Mattel Production. Along with Robbie and Gosling, the film stars America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. It is based on “Barbie” by Mattel, and produced by David Heyman, Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Robbie Brenner. Barbie will be released with BARBIE THE ALBUM, its star-studded musical companion, which will include Eilish’s song.
Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” is out now on all streaming platforms.
