On Saturday, May 4, 2024, the vibrant spirit of African art and philanthropy converged at INDUSTRIA in Brooklyn, NY, as Amref Health Africa hosted its annual ArtBall and accompanying art auction. The gala event served as a nexus, intertwining African culture with the power of giving, all while spotlighting the immense talent emanating from the African continent.
Co-chaired by Carmelo Anthony, Spike Lee, and Tonya Lewis Lee, the ArtBall brought together notable guests, including Kehinde Wiley, who was honored at the event, along with Lindsey Peoples, Earl Nurse, Storm Ascher, Indira Cesarine, Nadia Nascimento, Nadja Sayej, Carol Jenkins, Malik Roberts, Wanjiru Mwangi, Tariku Shiferaw, and Quiana Parks.
The event was brought to life by the dynamic hosting duo of Sahr Ngaujah and Franklin Sirmans, who bestowed the prestigious Rees Visionary Award upon Kehinde Wiley. In a heartfelt moment, Wiley, an icon in the art world, exemplified the spirit of giving by announcing a remarkable $700,000 donation to Amref Health Africa.
Central to the evening’s festivities was the art auction, a showcase of 42 art pieces on display and auctioned on Sothebys.com representing Contemporary African, Pan-African, and Black Art. Curated by a team including Storm Ascher, Cierra Britton, Alexandra Scotland, Natalie Kates, and Nadia Nascimento, the auction featured works by both emerging talents and established artists. Notable artists such as Hank Willis Thomas, Adama Delphine Fawundu, Khalif Tahir Thompson, Alex Anderson, Damien Davis, Genevieve Gaignard, Jamel Robinson, Lewinale Havette, Megan Gabrielle Harris, Crystal Yayra Anthony, Roscoe B Thicke, Troy Jones, Turiya Magadlela, and Rudy Shepherd contributed their creations, with all proceeds directed towards Amref’s healthcare endeavors across Africa.
Before the gala commenced, an intimate dinner and salon set the stage for enlightening discussions, including a fireside chat between Kehinde Wiley and Marc Lacey, Managing Director of the New York Times. This exchange of ideas enriched the evening, emphasizing the intersection of art, philanthropy, and global health.
As the night unfolded, the pulsating rhythms of FON Sound System filled the air, accompanied by a captivating live performance from Les Ballet Afrik. This fusion of music and movement underscored the spirit of the evening, uniting guests in celebration of African artistry and humanitarian efforts.
Guests were treated to a culinary experience curated by YESBABE and Amazing Graze NY, complemented by drinks by Ten To One, iBest Wines, Mary Taylor Wines, Mishka, Martell, Cantera Negra, and Aplos. The evening’s ambiance was further elevated by a bespoke step and repeat, crafted by Matay & Co, paying homage to West African aesthetics.
