Stéphane Kropf: The Art of Looking Sideways
Marc Jancou Contemporary
September 10-October 25, 2014
Marc Jancou Contemporary will present Swiss artist Stéphane Kropf’s first solo exhibition in the United States this September. Kropf is known for his large-format, abstract canvases that uncover the “pure sensuality” of painting. During this exhibition, the artist will showcase his ongoing project, “Situated Knowledge.” In this series, he plays with interference paint, which is known for reflecting its complimentary color as well as its complimentary hue, depending on the observer’s position in front of the piece. The paint has no primary color of its own, making it impossible to be depicted truthfully through photographs. “Situated Knowledge” reflects on this concept: it furthers the idea that eyesight is the strongest sensory organ and challenges the viewer to use his or her’s optical intellect.
