Predictions for Oscar winners have already begun, propelled by the rounds of nominees doled out by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild last week. Most of the Golden Globe nominees affirmed cord-cutters and the unquestionable shift of talent, audiences and awards to streaming services (that brought in a total of 30 nominations compared to cable channel counterparts bagging 25). Netflix won the most with movies like “The Irishman” and “Marriage Story” and television series like “The Crown” and “Unbelievable” earning 17 nominations. “Fleabag” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” revealed Amazon Prime’s carved niche in comedies, while HBO proved that it had something for everyone with series like “Big Little Lies” and “Chernobyl.” AppleTV+, which went live in November this year, proved that it was a worthy contender too, with 3 nominations for “The Morning Show”. With most of the nominations ebb and flowing with the internet culture, movies like “Parasite” and “Joker” were definitely expected on the list. The screamingly unpopular ending that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss imagined for fantasy series “Game Of Thrones” were resonated by the Hollywood Foreign Press as well, only nominating Kit Harrington’s performance this year. While the Golden Globes could shed light on the upcoming list of Oscar nominees, we do hope that the Academy does not follow suit with the number of women filmmakers overlooked by the HFP – women in directing, screenplay and motion picture categories.
