Sheila Vand is the total package: genuine, smart and incredibly talented. We chatted with the actress in 2014 about her starring role in Ana Lily Amirpour’s “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night.” Now, Beauty Editor Tina Turnbow catches up with Sheila following her work in “We The Animals,” a coming of age story based on Justin Torres’s novel of the same name, that will show at Tribeca Film Festival on April 24th and 25th. If you can’t make it, catch Sheila on TNT’s series “Snowpiercer” and alongside Susan Sarandon in “Vulture Club,” an upcoming film produced by Youtube Red.
Sheila shares her beauty scoop and tried out some fresh springtime looks. Read on!
Tina: Can you share your day-to-day makeup routine?
Sheila: Being Persian, I’m all about the eyes, so mascara and eyeliner are my staples. I like to brush my brows out too—the bushier, the better. Other than that, I keep it simple and try not to put too much on my skin. Just a little concealer around my eyes and anywhere else that might need some extra love. I try to keep it light so my skin can breathe. And I always have Chapstick in my bag because you know I love soft kisses!
Do you enjoy experimenting with different looks, colors and hair styles?
Absolutely. Part of why I became an actress is because I love trying on different looks and personalities. I get bored of the same old thing, so I try to switch it up between photo shoots and red carpet looks. Some people say that you have to brand yourself with a look. I say, do whatever is the most fun for you. I like keeping Hollywood on its toes so that it can’t put me in a box. People always say I look so different photo to photo, and I like that. There are so many different dimensions to who I am, why not express them all?
Do you have a skincare regime to help maintain your luminous complexion?
My schedule is pretty crazy so I’m quite a minimalist when it comes to self-care. In general, I think your skin is happier the less you fuss with it. I have friends who spend so much time and money trying every different skincare product and diet and sometimes I think it backfires. I try to leave my skin alone as much as possible. The most important thing is to wash your face, moisturize, and exfoliate. And drink lots and lots of water. Your skin has a natural renewal cycle, so with a little bit of help, it’ll work it’s own magic. Sleep is important too. And I like to use natural oils for moisturizers, like coconut oil and vitamin E oil. I’d rather not weigh my skin down with a bunch of heavy creams or chemicals.
Who or what are your style and beauty inspirations?
My first beauty inspiration is definitely my mother. I used to love looking at photos of her in Iran in the 70s in her big bell bottoms and leather boots. When I was growing up in the 90s, she used to rock silk jumpsuits with the dopest gold jewelry. She had style for days. She taught me how to be both sexy and elegant at the same time, and I always try to bring that level of class to my style. Even if I’m going for something more street or psychedelic or weird, I still like to keep it classy and I think I definitely get that from my mama.
