Armory Week 2024 is coming this September 6-8, and bringing the world’s preeminent international contemporary and modern art galleries to New York City. Since its founding thirty years ago in 1994, the fair has played a leading role in the city’s cultural landscape and position as an important cultural capital of the world.

The Armory Show consists of elevated presentations and thoughtful programming, combining curatorial leadership with meaningful institutional partnerships to create engaging public art activations.

This is the first year that the Armory Show will be put on by the contemporary art collective Frieze, and the fair will now have Platform and Focus sections, as well as a Curatorial Leadership Summit (CLS). The different sections will be tied together with the overarching theme of the 2024 show: art-historical reverberations and echoes in the present. As this year is the 30th Anniversary of the New York show, three New York-based curators will be in charge of the program.

For Platform, Independent Curator Eugenie Tsai brings together large-scale installations and site-specific works that examine how memory, material, and spirit interplay. For Focus, Robyn Farrell (Senior Curator at NYC nonprofit space The Kitchen) will collect works that reflect on the experimental and avant-garde spirit of the fair at its founding and its namesake: the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art at NYC’s 69th Regiment Armory. Works also probe radical strategies and poetic interventions that interdisciplinary forms and cultural exchange bring to art. Chief Curator of the Hessel Museum and Bard College Graduate Program Director at the Center for Curatorial Studies Lauren Cornell will chair the seventh annual CLS with a closed-door session and a public keynote presentation. Cornell will directly examine conversations surrounding the theme of art-historical reverberations and present echoes.

“I am proud to announce an extraordinary team of curators for our 30th Anniversary edition. The Armory Show 2024 is thrilled to have Eugenie, Robyn, and Lauren bring their impressive talent and unique vision to the fair’s curated sections. We are fortunate to have them collaborate on a theme that both reflects their individual interests and collectively informs our understanding of how the past informs the present. We look forward to seeing which artists they highlight and what conversations, connections, and discoveries they inspire this year.”

– Nicole Berry, Executive Director of The Armory Show

In addition to the Armory Show, many satellite fairs will pop up in September with various foci.

NADA HOUSE

September 3 – October 27, 2024

The New Art Dealer’s Alliance (NADA) is preparing for the sixth edition of its exhibition NADA House from September 3 – October 27, 2024. The collaborative, public exhibition at a new location in Nolan Park will begin just before and run long after the end of Armory Week.

The exhibition will explore Governors Island’s evolving identity, from its Lenape origins and roles in the Revolutionary War and as a military base, to its current use for artistic and scientific endeavors. This project aims to engage with the island’s unique history and context, fostering a dialogue between the art and the site’s multifaceted past. Additionally, a digital catalog on newartdealers.org will document the event, enhancing accessibility for those unable to attend in person.

SPRING/BREAK Art Show
625 Madison Ave, New York, NY
September 4 – 9

The SPRING/BREAK Art Show will celebrate its lucky 13th edition in New York City in 2024, with the theme INT./EXT. (interior/exterior). This year’s theme invites artists to explore the dual nature of art, blending reality and fiction, and transforming everyday subjects into transcendent works that bridge the tangible and the intangible. The show encourages submissions from independent curators, galleries, non-profits, and project spaces, with extended application deadlines to accommodate a broad range of artistic visions.

The New York edition promises to delve deep into the interplay between artistic creation’s inner and outer aspects, examining how different mediums and styles convey deeper meanings beyond their physical representations. This exploration of INT./EXT. will highlight the transformative power of art, showcasing works that challenge and redefine the boundaries of perception and understanding. To prepare audiences for the experience, the fair presents a list of “required” readings, films, and songs including The Castle by Franz Kafka, Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock, and “Music for Airports” by Brian Eno.

SALON ZÜRCHER
31st Edition 100 Women of Spirit +, Part 1
33 Bleecker Street, NYC

September 2 – September 8, 2024

An intimate alternative to the large-scale fairs during The Armory Show, Salon Zürcher invites a distinguished group of women artists to exhibit at their NoHo/East Village gallery space. Since 2011, Salon Zürcher has hosted 28 mini-art fairs, all of which have been major successes for the artists involved. Their Bleecker Street gallery is within walking distance from the TriBeCa, New Museum, and Lower East Side art scenes.

100 Women of Spirit+ is an upcoming exhibition by Salon Zürcher, curated by Gwenolee Zürcher, that builds on their tradition of showcasing women artists. This new exhibition, launching in September 2024, honors the legacy of these past exhibitions and the historical role of salons in empowering women through culture. Featuring artists such as Olivia Beens, Camille De Galbert, Brigid Kennedy, Roxane Revon, and Mary Tooley Parker, it aims to create a supportive community inspired by the feminist art movement and the collaborative spirit of the past. The exhibition will reflect the diverse practices and enduring commitment of women artists, fostering a network that extends beyond the gallery space.
