Alexander Wang channelled chic BMX biker style in his SS 2012 collection in New York this month. Key trends to hit Wang’s futuristic edged catwalk included luminescent fluorescent colours, mesh cut-out layering, leather detailing and graphic retro prints – which edged on both tribal and 80’s gym slip. An excess of functional detailing, in the shape of oversized patched pockets and zips closed up to the neck drew a lot of attention as his super-cool classed models strutted down the catwalk.Hair was kept unprimed, taking on a wet, rough and ready to ride appearance.
Centre partings were set with lashes of black eyeliner and sun-blanched skin. Key pieces included white purple and orange printed jersey dresses and sweaters and draw-string dresses teamed with plastic zips and neck scarf accessories. Wang’s athletic models paced down the catwalk look effortlessly sporty and cool in hugging leotards, jumpsuits and cat suits. Materials were synthetic-looking, using an abundance of perforated plastic and mesh which emphasised the designer’s sports luxe direction.
