MUSEUM OF SEX FEATURES FEMINIST ART IN ‘NSFW FEMALE GAZE’ EXHIBIT

The Museum of Sex (MoSEX) and Creators (VICE Media’s art and culture publication) present ‘NSFW Female Gaze,’ an art exhibition showcasing over 25 emerging female artists that explore and redefine sexuality on their own terms. The exhibit opens Wednesday 21st and will remain on view until September 24th.

“Women use the internet as a tool for empowerment and have become more inquisitive and open about sexuality. The drive to understand our bodies and desires is now seen as ubiquitous–instead of fringe or a sign of bad character.”

– Lissa Rivera, Artist and Associate Curator, MoSex

In today’s modern age of technology, women are surrounded by a world of images that reflect male perspectives and sexual desire. The artists featured in ‘NSFW Female Gaze’ use their artistic abilities to veer from the traditional personification of women as a muse or object. Their art expresses the exploration of new angles and perspectives of sex and what is sexy. The artists are working at the intersections of identity and life experience, genre, and process.

“Outside of covering the arts on an everyday basis, Creators wanted to support a movement of female artists that we found were impacting our audience in new and invigorating ways, from their visual language to their political messages. Creators, as a platform, is dedicated to emerging genres and diverse voices and we couldn’t help but want to promote these artists on a greater scale with an exhibition at the Museum of Sex.”

– Marina Garcia-Vasquez, Editor-in-Chief, Creators

Lissa Rivera, an artist and curator at MoSEX, and Creators Editor-in-Chief Marina Garcia-Vasquez, co-curated the female gaze exhibit. The mission of MoSEX is to preserve and present the history, evolution, and cultural significance of human sexuality. Currently, the museum’s permanent collection has more than 20,000 sexually significant artifacts.

Mediums of the featured artwork include Instagram and GIF platforms, textile, painting, and photography that reconstruct stereotypes and explores the relationship between gender, pleasure, fantasy, and desire.
