Following a series of sexual assaults at Swedish music festivals Putte I Parken and Bråvalla (causing the latter to be cancelled next year), comedian Emma Knyckare posted a Kickstarter page calling for the crowdfunded creation of Statement, the world’s first female-only music festival. Knyckare raised 533,120 Swedish krona ($66,175) to make the event a reality.
Statement will host 10,000 guests in Sweden in 2018. It will only allow cis women, trans women, and those who identify as non-binary to attend. Knyckare explains on her Kickstarter page that her goal is to create a “safe space for the people who want to attend a festival without feeling scared for their personal safety.”
