THE SHOW MUST GO ON: WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 93RD ACADEMY AWARDS

Awards season is in full swing and the Academy Awards, with a live stream of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, announced the highly-anticipated nominations for their 93rd show. Not letting the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic get them down, the Oscars will take place on April 25, nearly two months after its original date of Feb. 28, and will present an in-person show airing from multiple venues. Contrary to previous Academy Awards shows, nominated films were not required to have a theatrical run and the eligibility window for films to be considered was extended from Dec. 31 to Feb. 28, 2021.

Starring Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman, David Fincher’s Mank is leading the list with 10 nominations including best picture, best cinematography, and best directing. Following thereafter in highest number of nominations is Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah, which is also the first all-Black production team nominated for best picture, Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland, Florian Zeller’s The Father, Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari, and Darius Marder’s Sound of Metal, with six nominations each.

Viola Davis is nominated for best actress for her role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, making her the most-nominated Black actress in history, with four nominations. This also marks the first year that two women are nominated for best directing – Chloé Zhao for her work on Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman.

“So proud and grateful to every amazing person who worked on this film,” Fennell said in a series of tweets. “Never going to stop crying.”

Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), who is the first Muslim to be nominated for best actor, also stands alongside Steven Yeun of Minari, both making history as the first time two actors of Asian decent are nominated in the category. Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in August 2020 and worked until his death, is also nominated for best actor for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
