ERYKAH BADU PLAYS A NEUROTIC JAZZ SINGER IN “MAYISHA (SO LONG)”

Four-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer Erykah Badu released a new music video today for “Mayisha (So Long).” The cinematic video follows the release of the track from Robert Glasper‘s album Everything’s Beautiful, a modernization and reinterpretation of Miles Davis‘ songs. Glasper stars opposite Badu in the video, playing Badu’s consoling lover and the band’s keyboard player.

Badu, who also directed and wrote the short film, plays Sarah Bellam, an anxious, flustered jazz singer. The film opens with Bellam in the dressing room having a meltdown with her lover trying to comfort her and then moves into the musical performance of “Mayisha (So Long)” amidst a full band. Following the beautiful performance, Bellam once again becomes unbalanced. The video was produced by Badu’s own Control Freaq Media, along with Coodie and Chike of Creative Control, and marks the singer/songwriter/producer’s 12th self-directed music video.

What’s next for Erykah Badu? The Grammy winner stars in, co-produced, and provided music for the new film The Land, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival. The drama hits theaters August 4th.
