The Brooklyn Museum has announced its upcoming exhibition, “Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985,” the first show to take a comprehensive look at the artistic practices of women in Latin America as well as Latina and Chicana women in the United States.

The exhibition will feature over 260 works—spanning photography, sculpture, painting and video— by more than 120 artists from 15 countries. The show was originally organized by the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles earlier this year. The Brooklyn Museum is the only East Coast venue to host the exhibit, which opens April 13th, 2018.

“Edita (la del plumero)” by Sandra Eleta (b. 1942 in Panama), one of the works which will be featured in the exhibition.

Hammer Museum’s “Radical Women” co-curator Andrea Giunta explained, “poetic and political, topics explored in the exhibition include self-portraiture, body landscape, and feminisms.” Co-curator of the Brooklyn Museum’s presentation elaborated: “the exhibition is a remarkable scholarly achievement, expanding the canon and complicating known narratives of conceptual art and radical art-making.”
